Essential Editing Tips For Photos

Want to clean up your digital photos before posting them online or sending them to a print shop?  Here are a few quick things to do in your graphics software that can make those shots considerably better.

Fix orientation.  If your smartphone doesn’t automatically fix photo orientation, it’s something you can quickly correct with a single click on your editing software.  Have you seen those sideways photos in Facebook?  Ugh, irritating.

Remove the red eye.  Even free graphics software now have one-click corrections for red eye.  Just click the “remove red eye” option and the software will automatically perform the deed.

Crop.  Photobombs can be funny.  Most of the time, though, they’re just irritating.  If the offending parties are on any of the edges, you can just crop them out.

Resize.  If you’re going to post a photo online, resize it to under 1,600x 1,600 pixels.  That’s a good enough image to be clear, without taking forever to load on slower internet connections.

Balance and tone.  There’s a difficult way to do this.  Don’t bother with that.  Almost every graphic editing software will have one-click balance and tone corrections.  Use those options to quickly improve color and lighting.  If it actually makes the photo worse, just undo and leave it as is.
