Part-Time Income For Students: Logo Design

If you’re inclined towards graphic arts, you may want to start a side business designing and selling logos.  In case you’re not aware, there’s a huge market for this.  From local companies who need a logo for their business to small websites who want a professional header graphic, there’s a seemingly inexhaustible market out there.

The first step to starting a logo design business is to have the proper software to create your design.  Many times, you’ll see a cheap service or product online offering a “logo creator” program.  While that could work for personal uses, it won’t fly if you want to do this professionally.

Instead, you need a proper vector-editing software, such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.  Both of those, along with other titles in the category, are usually available with educational discounts, so look into that possibility for your design project aspirations.   There are also free vector editing programs like Inkscape, which happens to be very good, if you’re fine with having no customer support.

Why can’t you just use the graphics editors in Microsoft Office or Photoshop?  Primarily, because of those let you draw vectors.  Using vectors, you can export the logo to any size for any purpose, which is why customers usually ask for a vector copy of the image when ordering logos.  After all, even a client who commissions a logo for his website might need the same logo later when printing t-shirts, banners and, for all you know, an office if the web site becomes successful.
