Use YouTube To Compare Software Features

A lot of the time, students ask me how they can find out whether a software has the features they need.   Sure, they can read the overviews and list of features on the product websites, but it does little unless they can see it in action.

I used to wonder about that, too, until I realized this service sitting right under our collective noses: YouTube.  Do a quick search on YouTube for any software and you will find video upon video of that particular title being used.  There are tutorials, demos and all sorts of content posted that should easily fill you in on what a particular title can and cannot offer.

If you find it difficult following written reviews, YouTube should be especially helpful, as you can see the software actually being used for a variety of functions.  That way, you don’t just get to read that so-and-so “has an amazing array of options for a certain type of task,” you can see it in plain sight.

Because the video-sharing website has been around for a while, there is a large amount of content for literally any software.  While newly-released ones (three months or less) may not have plenty of videos yet, there are almost always a few posted by the publisher or a major review site.
